Mental Health and Physical Activity

Lately there has been more awareness on how important mental health is. There also has been more talk about how important physical fitness is, but are we enlightened that both compliment one another? If we’re being honest I wasn’t. That’s not to say that I didn’t have knowledge of the two being very closely connected. I wasn’t aware of how many people actually experience these mental health challenge.

MENTAL HEALTH BENEFITS OF EXERCISE

Starting an exercise regimen is not all about being skinny, having nice abs, and huge muscles. Unfortunately, thats what social media platforms will make people believe. Of course being active will improve your physical appearance, slim your waistline, improve the sex life, and put extra years to your life. On the contrary, that’s not what solely drives people to stay committed to being active. Those who are more active through out the week do so because it gives them immense well-being.

They’re able to deal with the large amount of adversity they’ll be facing in their day. Feeling more energetic throughout their day, more efficient sleep at night as well as feeling more relaxed and positive about themselves. To reap said benefits you don’t have to be a gym fanatic, you just have to be consistent.

DEPRESSION AND EXERCISE

There are studies that show exercise can treat mild to moderate feelings of depression as effectively as the prescribed antidepressant meds. This is without having to worry about different side effects, you at least know there’s only one side effects to exercise; DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness). A recent study from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health found that walking for an hour or running for 15 minutes a day can reduce the risk of depression by 26%.

HIGHER SELF ESTEEM

A consistent gym schedule is also an investment to your mind, body, and soul. Once it becomes a habit , it will encourage a better sense of self worth and make one feel more confident about their appearance. Additionally, by being able to meet small goals it will help you feel a sense of achievement. Knowing that you’re coming to the gym and you have support from you trainer or gym friends can help turn you into a more sane person.
